Great Explorers 5-6 year olds

Summer Program for Great Explorers (5-6 year olds)

The 5-6 year olds have 4 classrooms with a certified lead teacher in each room. This program is located in the Head Start building attached to the Boys & Girls Club. It is a licensed program, which means that we have different rules and regulations to follow than the Club. The 5-6 year olds must stay at a 15 to 1 ratio with a teacher and stay within their classroom. Breakfast, lunch, and snack served daily.

In order for your 5-6 year old child to attend this summer, you must fill out a membership form, health history form, and attach your child’s immunizations. The yearly Boys & Girls Club membership fee of $25 must also be paid. Once your child is registered, you must pay the first week’s payment for summer. This is $55 if you plan to have your child at the Club before 9 a.m. or $35 if you plan on having your child at the Club after 9 a.m. Once your membership forms are completed, and the first week’s charge is paid, your child will be added to the 5-6 year old roster. Since it is helpful to know each child’s schedule, please write on the membership form what days your child will be coming, or let your child’s teacher know any planned vacations or days they will be absent.

Parents can register for summer online here!

Welcome packets will also be sent out to parents who have participated in the past by mail or dropped off at your child’s school in May. The packet will include specific information on the Great Explorers Program as well as permission forms to be signed and turned in the first week of summer. This is a very important part of the program that allows your child to participate in activities outside of the building.

What if the program is full?

If you sign up for Great Explorers, but the classrooms have already reached their 65 children limit, your child will be placed on a waiting list. We will serve children on a first come, first serve basis. This is why it is important to register as soon as possible to have your best chance of securing a spot for your child.

Weekly Summer Fees & Payment Options

We charge per week, not per day. This means that it is the same cost whether your child comes 3 days or 5 days.

Before 9 a.m. After 9 a.m.
$55 1st child $35 1st child
$35 additional child $20 additional child

This year, payment will be due the Friday prior to the following week in order for your child to participate.

Scholarship assistance will be based on a sliding scale income but everyone will be expected to pay according to their income level. County assistance is accepted for children 5-6 years old. If you are interested in acquiring assistance, please contact your caseworker. If you are interested, please ask the front desk for paperwork.

Payment Options

Forms of payment include: credit card, check, cash, and automatic payments from your bank account.

New in 2017! The TraxOnline Parent Portal allows parents to register for summer, sign up for memberships as well as make payments on your account by credit or debit card. ALL parents are strongly encouraged to sign up and make payments using this method as the Club is moving toward being paperless!

The Great Explorers Program is a PBIS program. Throughout the day, we target these three components:

  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Safe

The expectations of the program will be clearly taught and modeled to each Club member.

Celebrations and Recognitions

The Great Explorers Program celebrates and recognizes Club members who follow our expectations and go above and beyond to make our program a great place to be. Celebrations will take place when all 4 classrooms earn a set amount of Great Explorer Stars. Celebrations include a trip to the fire station, a water day, an afternoon of coloring as they watch a movie, and much more! Recognitions give us a chance to award our members who have followed the key components of the program (Respectful, Responsible, Safe) for the month. Recognitions include a trip to Marble Park, a dance in the gym, and a carnival! More information can be found in our welcome packet.

Field Trips

One of the best parts of our program is our Tuesday adventures around the Fox Valley. We love to explore and enjoy all the fun trips that this area has available to us. Our normal field trip hours are 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. We will be heading up to Green Bay to Bay Beach and the Wildlife Sanctuary, and then around Neenah to the Roller Rink and Marble Park, and we will stick around Oshkosh, and head to the pool. Each of these field trips cost extra to have your child attend. They are anywhere from $5-$10 each and they must be paid before the field trip leaves on Tuesday morning. If your child chooses not to attend, there will be a teacher who will be staying back in the classroom. Permission forms will be handed out the Thursday prior to the field trip day. If the permission form is not signed or we do not have payment for the field trip, your child will not attend the trip.

Camp Radford

5-6 year olds will have the opportunity to visit Camp Radford this summer. For more information on the types activities kids can participate in while at camp, please visit our Camp Radford page.

Exploring our Community

We strive to stay connected with our community through activities and special adventures.

Downtown Oshkosh YMCA

We will be collaborating with the YMCA for swimming lessons once a week for three weeks. This is a swimming safety class that teaches our kids how to stay safe when being around water.

Oshkosh Public Library

Once a week, we will be going to the Oshkosh Public Library to have each child check out a book. This book will stay at the Boys & Girls Club and then we will return it the following week. This is a great way for our kids to pick out some of their favorite books and get the experience of seeing all their choices.

Fun at the Park

Every Wednesday from 9-11 a.m., we will be grabbing our water bottles and heading down to Menominee Park. We have a variety of outdoor activities that we bring with us. We will visit Little Oshkosh, the zoo, and the playgrounds around the park.

Cranky Pat’s Pizza

In the beginning of the summer, we have our Great Explorers walk to Cranky Pat’s Pizza on Main Street. They help our children make a few of their own pizzas. We then cook all the pizzas and get to taste test our work!

Jo-Ann Fabrics

We have just started a collaboration with Jo Ann Fabrics! They offer a variety of classes at their Oshkosh location and we are lucky enough to have the teacher of some of those classes come over to the classrooms to teach our kids. She does anything from sand art to cookie decorating.

Inside the Classroom

While at the Boys & Girls Club, your child will be participating in a variety of scheduled lessons and activities. Our short, interactive lessons will focus on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. The daily activities will include art and technology, as well as time out on the playground and in the gym.

To see a schedule for the Great Explorers program, see our online calendar.

Each classroom teacher has experience with children. They have either gone to school for education or have multiple years of experience in leading a classroom. We focus on lesson plans throughout the day which each staff is responsible in making.

Open House!

Wednesday, June 7th
6:00-7:30 pm

This open house gives your family a chance to meet your child’s teacher and tour the classroom he/she will be in this summer. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the Great Explorers Program.

If you turn in your packet during the open house, your child will receive a gift bag!
