08-13-2018 – One of my passions in my job is working with the Community Back to School Fair. This committee works year round to provide backpacks, school supplies, hygiene items, clothing, and haircuts to children in need. The program is a collaboration between 21 agencies that come together for a common goal of providing youth what they need to succeed in school. Each year this program provides 1000 youth from Oshkosh and Winneconne the tools for success. Forty one agencies are there with community resources providing families with affordable opportunities for their children. Some of the great things I have heard from youth are: An eight year old participant in last year’s program said, “I liked getting a new backpack and all new school supplies. My favorite is the brand new markers all of them worked.” A six year old girl said, “I was happy to get a new backpack, my old one has a hole in it and I lost my favorite Elsa pencil on the way to school last year we put duct tape on it to cover the hole but I will never get my favorite pencil back.” It is exciting to see youth leave the fair with backpacks full of smiles and in some cases a fresh haircut. These efforts would not be possible without the numerous volunteers and their generous support of donations of supplies, clothing, money and the gift of time. There are many ways that someone can help with this amazing program. The group collects donations year round so we are always looking for school supplies, hygiene items, and new clothing. On August 14 and 15 we are looking for volunteers to help us stuff backpacks, pack hygiene bags and sort clothing. The fair is on August 16th and we need volunteers to guide families through the fair and to provide support at the various stations so we can move families through in a timely manner. We love our volunteers who put in countless hours to be part of this program. If you would like to be part of the program please e-mail Lori Fields at Lorif@bgcosh.org. Your help is greatly appreciated.
