Director of Counseling



  • Take action to help create and sustain a values-based organizational culture that leaves ample room for individual and team autonomy, creates a clear and supported path toward position mastery, and wherein all program staff and volunteers believe at all times their success in fulfilling their role is necessary to the achievement of the organization’s mission.
  • Help build strong relationships with external partners that enhance the organization’s profile, support it’s strategic priorities and create opportunities for mission advancement.
  • Identify, assess, and inform Unit Director of internal issues related to programming, schedule, etc. that affect the mental well being of youth
  • Foster effective teamwork and open and timely communication between program directors, department leads, and others
  • Help build an environment that is inclusive and diverse fostering differing opinions and viewpoints.

Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Health Services

  • Ensure programming for 6-12 year olds and 13+ year olds relating to mental wellness, mindfulness, appropriate relationships, and responsibility for actions is being run every period.
  • Encourage youth to discuss emotions and experiences
  • Help building behavior plan with Director of Club Operations
  • Analyze behavior reports and discuss with leadership team
  • Ensure Teen focus primarily by working with Tween Coordinator
  • Work with individuals, families, groups and communities to improve mental health
  • During program times, supervise and support staff to determine behavioral approaches to help youth successful participate in club programming.
  • Refer clients to other mental health professionals and community resources
  • Directly provide counseling services to youth as needed
  • Manage all aspects of the Children and Teen Grief Support Network program including coordination and facilitation of monthly meetings as well as ongoing communication efforts to promote the program including but not limited to in person meetings with school staff, funeral homes, hospitals, etc. as well as managing the Grief Support Network Facebook page in coordination with the Marketing Director and Marketing Assistant.
  • Maintain good working relationships with support networks, government resources, and community resources

Talent development

  • Analyze and help determine the training related needs of program personnel in the organization by taking action to understand their objectives and challenges, assessing their skill and knowledge gaps, and identifying causes and factors that may limit performance.
  • Design, create, or make readily available to all program personnel training manuals and course materials to help staff understand mental health, youth development, trauma, and behaviors of youth.
  • Collaborate with the Business Director and Director of Club Operations and other in the formulation and development of training plans, procedures, and programs.
  • Directly teach and lead training and development activities as needed.
  • Be available to staff to answer questions and offer trainings/meetings to discuss as issues arise.
  • Mandated reporter training for staff

Family needs:

  • Ensure families receive information about community resources
  • Ensure family support programs and/or groups are provided to club families.
  • Ensure delivery of informative training for parents during family nights.
  • Interacting with parents and community members to encourage participation, obtain consent and support.
  • Ensure monitoring and reporting outcomes of programming.

Child Safety & Risk Management

  • Serve as a member of BGCO’s safety team
  • In partnership with the Safety Committee, develop and implement comprehensive trauma responsive measure to control and minimize risks on all aspects of safety with emphasis on those affecting Club members and program clients such as ongoing safety assessments, behavior management systems (PBIS), facility inspections and compliance tests, crisis response planning and implementation, training, and measurement.

Other responsibilities:

  • Submit approved expenditures on Club credit card.
  • Prioritize and organize multiple tasks and responsibilities in a manner that fulfills daily responsibilities while continuing to make progress toward longer-term objectives.
  • Participate in on-going continuing education and organizational training.
  • Mandated child abuse reporter.



  • Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work
  • Three years’ experience working as a counseling professional, preferably with at-risk children, youth and families with related and substantial talent development responsibilities
  • Ability to work a varied, flexible schedule of morning, afternoon, evening hours as job duties require.
  • Experience working with diverse populations of children and parents, particularly low- and moderate income groups.
  • Working knowledge of community resources.
  • Experience with group facilitation strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability and experience establishing collaborative partnerships.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to create and deliver professional presentations, interact with the community, staff, and volunteers.
  • Competency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, etc.
  • Must have demonstrated a level of confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Ability to manage stress and support others in stressful situations.
  • Must be 25 years of age or older with valid driver’s license and nine years driving experience and good driving record.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certificates.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • High energy level, comfortable performing multi-faceted projects.
  • Good vision and hearing necessary to complete tasks.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to function in a fast paced and noisy environment.
  • Must be able to think clearly and concisely.
