Social & Emotional Learning Specialist- Full time

Job Summary:          

The Social & Emotional Wellness Specialist is responsible for being a resource within the Club for staff, club members, and their families by providing training, short-term social services, and referrals.

Promote the components of health, wellness and fitness based on the organization’s strategic plan.

It is the responsibility of all staff to help cultivate and maintain positive donor relationships.

Hours vary. During the school year 11am-7:00pm, M-F. This is a salaried position, and it is understood that there may be hours required outside of those listed here.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (education, human services, counseling, etc.) preferred.
  • Three years of experience working with at-risk children, youth, and families
  • Flexibility needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic groups.
  • Working knowledge of community resources in Oshkosh, WI and Northeast, WI.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with program team, at risk youth, parents, and community leaders.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Competency in computer software including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Publisher. Experience with Visions preferred.
  • Competency in general office equipment usage including copier, printers, fax, and cash register.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Experience in establishing and leading programs, activities, and services for at risk youth.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving history.
  • Proven ability to motivate AT RISK youth and manage behavior problems.
  • Proven ability to attract, train, supervise, and motivate staff (both full-time and part-time).
  • Proven ability to deal with the public.
  • Proven ability to plan, market and implement quality programs using a youth development strategy.
  • Proven ability to organize and supervise AT RISK members in a safe environment.
  • Commitment to model and promote a lifestyle of health, wellness, and fitness.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Must possess a clean driving record.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certification

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Hold staff trainings to improve the overall program.
  • Oversee or support programs while the director/s are not present.
  • Keep records of behavior, incidents, and progress.
  • Create a referral process for meeting with staff and members.
  • Maintains contact regularly with external community groups, schools, social workers, clients, BGCO partners and others to promote and ensure family information and referral services are successful.
  • Help build strong relationships with external partners that enhance the organization’s profile, support its strategic priorities, and create opportunities for mission advancement.
  • Attend community-based meetings and pertinent to needs/issues of youth in the community.
  • Identify, assess, and inform directors of internal issues related to programming that affect the mental well-being of youth.
  • Help build an environment that is inclusive and diverse fostering differing opinions and viewpoints.
  • Create mental wellness programs and groups or use BGCA programs for ages 5-18 to ensure regular small groups and sessions are running throughout the year.
  • Encourage youth to discuss emotions and experiences.
  • Work with individuals, families, groups, and communities to improve mental health.
  • Refer clients to other mental health professionals and community resources.
  • Manage all aspects of the Children and Teen Grief Support Network program including coordination and facilitation of monthly meetings as well as ongoing communication efforts to promote the program including but not limited to in person meetings with school staff, funeral homes, hospitals, etc. as well as managing the Grief Support Network Facebook page in coordination with the Marketing Director and Marketing Assistant.
  • Ensure delivery of informative training for parents during family/parent classes and family nights.
  • Create a “Social Skill of the Month” curriculum for all BGCO sites.
  • Using a trauma informed care model, the SEL Coordinator addresses an individual child’s social and emotional learning needs through a multi-faceted approach within the Club.
  • Manage intervention and prevention support for youth during Club/Caregiver meetings.
  • Engage in creating a small caseload of youth and set goals focused on helping them succeed during Club time.
  • Assist in crisis situations and apply appropriate interventions.
  • Implement and monitor the implementation of social emotional interventions.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of members receiving phone contact, social service care, completed services, including case histories and referrals in database/case notes.
  • Work with the Community Center partners to develop ways for them to incorporate their services and programs into the Club.
  • Communicates effectively with students, parents, volunteers, peers, and the community.
  • Models professional and ethical standards
  • Meets professional obligations, paperwork, and deadlines through efficient, organized work habits.
  • Mandated child abuse reporter.

 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • High energy level, comfortable performing multi-faceted projects.
  • Good vision and hearing necessary to complete tasks.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods.
  • Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to function in a fast paced and noisy environment.
  • Must be able to think clearly and concisely.
