Great Explorers 5-6 year olds

Summer Program for Great Explorers (5-6 year olds)

***We are busy getting ready for summer at the Club which will officially begin Monday, June 1st, 2020. If you registered for our summer programming and were admitted into the program, you would have received your confirmation last week. Both our summer sites are full and we do have a waiting list. If you have questions about the 5 – 6 year old Great Explorer’s summer program you can contact the Director of Club Operations at***

2020 summer hours begin on Monday, June 1st and end on Friday, August 21st. Great Explorers is a summer-time program for Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh members who are or will be 5 or 6 years old on June 8th, 2020. Members must have completed Kindergarten to enroll. The Great Explorers have 4 classrooms with a certified lead teacher in each room. They are located in the building attached to the Boys & Girls Club. It is a licensed program which follows additional rules and regulations besides those in place at the Boys & Girls Club. For example, the Great Explorers classrooms must stay at a ratio of 17 children to 1 teacher.

While in the Great Explorer’s program at the Boys & Girls Club, your child will participate in a variety of scheduled lessons and activities. Our short, interactive lessons focus on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. The daily activities include art and technology, as well as time out on the playground and in the gym.

Meals are included. Breakfast is served between 8:15 – 8:30 a.m., lunch is served between 11:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m., and snack is served between 2:15 – 2:30 p.m.

In order for your child to attend during summer, you must fill out a membership form, health history form, and attach your child’s immunizations. Summer Registration Form must also be filled out and will be available at Boys & Girls Club after school sites from 2:45 – 6:00 p.m. M-F, and at the Radford Center front desk starting Monday, January 13, 2020.  The membership fee of $25 must also be paid. Once your child is registered, you must fill out a holding form and pay the first week’s fee. Once your membership forms are completed, and you have paid the first week’s fee, your child will be added to the Great Explorers Program roster.

Weekly Summer Fees 2020

We charge per week, not per day. This means that it is the same cost whether your child comes 3 days or 5 days.

First Child Additional Children
$80 $60

Payment is due the Friday prior to the following week in order for your child to participate.

Scholarship assistance will be based on a sliding scale income but everyone will be expected to pay according to their income level. County assistance is accepted for children 5-6 years old. If you are interested in acquiring assistance, please contact your caseworker. If you are interested, please ask the front desk for paperwork.

Payment Options

Forms of payment include: credit card, check, cash, and automatic payments from your bank account and can be made by phone or at our Radford Center front desk. While we accept many forms of payment, we encourage our secure automatic withdrawal plan. This gives you a 5% discount on your weekly fee!

The Great Explorers Program is a PBIS program. Throughout the day, we target these three components:

  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Safe

The expectations of the program will be clearly taught and modeled to each Club member.

Children are also expected to participate fully in each program and behave according to our Club rules found in our Parent Handbook. Children who choose not to follow these expectations will not be able to participate in our summer program.

What if the program is full?

If you sign up for Great Explorers, but the classrooms have already reached their size limit, your child will be placed on a waiting list. We will serve children on a first come, first served basis. This is why it is important to register as soon as possible to have your best chance of securing a spot for your child.

Field Trips

One of the best parts of our program is our weekly adventures around the Fox Valley. We love to explore and enjoy all the fun trips that this area has available to us. Our normal field trip hours are 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. We will be heading up to Green Bay to Bay Beach and the Wildlife Sanctuary, and then around Neenah to the Roller Rink and Marble Park, and we will stick around Oshkosh, and head to the pool. Each of these field trips cost extra to have your child attend. They are anywhere from $5-$10 each and they must be paid before the field trip leaves on Tuesday morning. If your child chooses not to attend, there will be a teacher who will be staying back in the classroom. Permission forms will be handed out the Thursday prior to the field trip day. If the permission form is not signed or we do not have payment for the field trip, your child will not attend the trip.

Camp Radford

5-6 year olds will have the opportunity to visit Camp Radford this summer. For more information on the types activities kids can participate in while at camp, please visit our Camp Radford page.

Exploring our Community

We strive to stay connected with our community through activities and special adventures.

Oshkosh Public Library

Once a week, we will be going to the Oshkosh Public Library to have each child check out a book. This book will stay at the Boys & Girls Club and then we will return it the following week. This is a great way for our kids to pick out some of their favorite books and get the experience of seeing all their choices.

Fun at the Park

Every Wednesday from 9-11 a.m., we will be grabbing our water bottles and heading down to Menominee Park. We have a variety of outdoor activities that we bring with us. We will visit Little Oshkosh, the zoo, and the playgrounds around the park.

Cranky Pat’s Pizza

In the beginning of the summer, we have our Great Explorers walk to Cranky Pat’s Pizza on Main Street. They help our children make a few of their own pizzas. We then cook all the pizzas and get to taste test our work!

Jo-Ann Fabrics

We have a collaboration with Jo Ann Fabrics! They offer a variety of classes at their Oshkosh location and we are lucky enough to have the teacher of some of those classes come over to the classrooms to teach our kids. She does anything from sand art to cookie decorating.

Inside the Classroom

While at the Boys & Girls Club, your child will be participating in a variety of scheduled lessons and activities. Our short, interactive lessons will focus on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. The daily activities will include art and technology, as well as time out on the playground and in the gym.

To see a schedule for the Great Explorers program, see our online calendar starting May 1st, 2020.

Each classroom teacher has experience with children. They have either gone to school for education or have multiple years of experience in leading a classroom. We focus on lesson plans throughout the day which each staff is responsible in making.

Open House

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2020
6:00-7:30 p.m.

This open house gives your family a chance to meet your child’s teacher and tour the classroom he/she will be in this summer. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the Great Explorers Program.

If you turn in your packet during the open house, your child will receive a gift bag!
