Position Overview

The Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh is seeking motivated college students who are interested in gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in a youth-serving nonprofit organization. This internship provides an opportunity to apply classroom learning in a professional environment while helping improve the lives of children and families.

Interns may gain experience in business administration, nonprofit operations, education, youth programming, human services, leadership, psychology, communications, or related fields. Assignments will be matched, whenever possible, with the intern’s academic major, career interests, skills, and internship requirements.

The intern will work alongside BGCO staff to support daily operations, youth programs, special projects, administrative functions, and community engagement. The internship is designed to provide meaningful learning experiences while allowing the intern to contribute to the Club’s mission and programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administration & Business

Depending on the intern’s academic program and interests, responsibilities may include:

  • Assist with day-to-day administrative and office operations.
  • Organize files, records, forms, spreadsheets, and other administrative materials.
  • Assist with data entry, tracking, reporting, and basic data analysis.
  • Support scheduling, event planning, meetings, and special projects.
  • Assist with purchasing, inventory, supplies, and operational projects.
  • Help develop or update administrative procedures and resources.
  • Assist with research and preparation of reports, presentations, and organizational materials.
  • Support fundraising, donor relations, community engagement, or nonprofit development projects.
  • Assist with social media, newsletters, communications, or marketing projects when appropriate.
  • Participate in projects designed to improve organizational efficiency and service delivery.

Youth Programming & Education

Interns interested in education, programming, or youth development may:

  • Assist with planning and implementing age-appropriate activities for Club members ages 6–18.
  • Support academic enrichment, tutoring, STEM, literacy, and homework assistance.
  • Assist with recreation, arts, leadership, character and citizenship, and health and wellness activities.
  • Develop or assist with lesson plans, activities, curriculum, and program materials.
  • Encourage participation, positive behavior, teamwork, and leadership among youth.
  • Provide positive adult mentorship and serve as a positive role model.
  • Assist staff in creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and engaging Club environment.
  • Observe and support youth development practices.
  • Help evaluate activities and provide feedback regarding program effectiveness.

Human Services, Psychology & Youth Development

Interns interested in human services, psychology, social services, or related fields may:

  • Develop positive relationships with youth and provide encouragement and support.
  • Assist staff in understanding and responding appropriately to youth needs and behaviors.
  • Support social-emotional learning and positive youth development activities.
  • Assist with mentoring and relationship-building activities.
  • Observe youth interactions and program environments as appropriate to academic requirements.
  • Help connect youth to appropriate Club resources and activities.
  • Assist with family and community engagement activities.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Participate in staff discussions regarding youth development, behavior support, and program improvement as appropriate.

Leadership & Professional Development

Interns may also:

  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with special projects that support the Club’s strategic priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, community partners, and other interns.
  • Take responsibility for assigned projects from planning through completion.
  • Practice professional communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Identify opportunities for improving programs, services, or internal processes.
  • Develop a professional portfolio or final project when required by the student’s academic program.

Internship Learning Opportunities

The internship will be structured to provide opportunities for students to:

  • Apply academic knowledge in a real-world nonprofit setting.
  • Develop professional communication and leadership skills.
  • Gain experience working with children, teens, families, staff, and community partners.
  • Understand nonprofit operations and community-based programming.
  • Develop project management and organizational skills.
  • Practice problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Gain exposure to multiple areas of Boys & Girls Club operations.
  • Build professional relationships and career connections.
  • Complete academic internship requirements and learning objectives.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
  • Pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Education, Human Services, Leadership, Psychology, Nonprofit Management, Social Work, Communications, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with children, teens, families, or community organizations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, responsible, and willing to learn.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Comfortable interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Previous experience working with youth, volunteering, or participating in community organizations is helpful but not required.

Required Background & Safety Requirements

Because interns may have direct contact with youth, all internship placements are subject to Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh requirements, which may include:

  • Completion of the BGCO application and onboarding process.
  • Background screening.
  • Required safety and youth-protection training.
  • Completion of required Club Safe Training before having unsupervised contact with youth.
  • Compliance with all Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh policies and procedures.

Physical & Work Environment

The intern may work in an office, classroom, recreation area, Learning Center, Teen Center, or other Club program environment. The position may involve sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting program materials, and participating in youth activities.

A successful intern will demonstrate professionalism, initiative, reliability, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. The intern should be able to build positive relationships, contribute to a team, accept feedback, and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
