Before the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh was shut down due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wisconsin, the Teen Center was full of new spring activities! Teens were participating in programs such as H.O.P.E group (Hold On Pain Ends- a group about being around family/friends who are dealing with substance abuse), Love 146 (a sex trafficking prevention program ran by Reach Counseling) and our teen girls were taking part in our Young Women of Color Support Group led by Dr. Kadijiah Kelly. Besides these wonderful programs, our teen staff were running other programs such as boxing club, crafts, Guitar 101, book club, and various fitness programs in our newly redone Club Fit! As always, our tutors were available every day after school to help teens with homework and studying as the semester slowly comes to an end. We want ALL teens to end the school year with awesome grades! With that being said, we are trying to navigate these difficult times and find new ways to help our teens succeed academically.
Our Keystone Jets were off to an awesome start as they had just been charted as a gold level club for the 2020 school year and are now eligible to attend the National Keystone Conference in Washington D.C. this summer. They have done countless volunteer hours and are currently working on a national project based on emotional wellness. The Keystone Club hopes to plan a community park clean up project in the near future as part of their national project and also plan more physical activities such as zumba and group classes to enhance our club members emotional and physical wellness. We are hoping that they still get the opportunity to attend the Keystone Conference if it’s safe for all Boys & Girls Club members.
As we continue into spring, our planning for summer programs is still in full swing. The Teen Center will have plenty of fun activities and programs happening this summer including our weekly field trips! Pollock pool, Noah’s Ark, Devil’s Lake camping trip, community service, college tours, and Fondy Aqua Park are just some of the cool things we will be doing this summer! We are planning with the hopes of being able to open our doors again to the community soon!
