An Update from Our Be Great Graduate Coordinator at Oshkosh North

March 9, 2022

Currently, the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh is serving 33 students at Oshkosh North High School. The program is close to meeting its goal of serving a total of 40 students and aims to do this by the end of the school year. The following table shows how hard these students have been working over the past year. We are very proud of this program and our students!

February

2021 2022
Students improving or maintaining language arts course grades 73% 85%
Students improving or maintaining math grades 73% 88%
Students improving or maintaining better school day behavior 100% 95%
High school students who are on-track for graduation in terms of credit accrual 77% 85%
Students maintaining acceptable school attendance by having no more than 10 absences during the school year 82% 80%
Seniors graduating on time 83% 100%

The Graduate & Career Coordinators are also offering an after-school program to all students enrolled at North High. This program allows students to stay after school to have a quiet place to do their homework and get help if they need it. The program runs every Tuesday from 3:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and a snack is provided.

In the past six months, students have had the opportunity to go on several college tours including Lakeshore Technical College, UW Madison, SJ Spanbauer Aviation and Industrial Center (which is a part of Fox Valley Technical College), and most recently visited UW Oshkosh’s access campus, UW Fond du Lac. The goal of these tours is to showcase the differences between technical schools, colleges, and universities and of to expose the students to campus life and the programs areas offered at each. Students also have learned about what it will look like to live on their own should they choose to go to a school further away from home. Coming up this month, there will be an opportunity to tour Fox Valley Technical College and UW Oshkosh’s access campus, UW Fox Cities, both located in Appleton, WI.

We’re also happy to be able to go on industry tours so students can see first-hand what types of jobs are available at the places we tour. In the past few months, we’ve had the opportunity to tour Festival Foods and Muza Sheet Metal. These career tours offer a great opportunity for students to learn about different career paths and what types of careers are in their own backyard. Students also enjoy these tours because it helps them narrow down their options. Instead of being open to everything, they start to make decisions on what types of careers align with their interests and goals and what might not so they can explore a career path further.

We’re excited to see what the next few months bring before we head into summer!

About the Be Great Graduate Program:

Club members in grades 10th-12th work with the Graduate & Career Coordinators to stay on track for graduation with grades, attendance, and credit accumulation. The goal is to have members graduate from high school on time with a plan to be college, community or career ready following their graduation. The program coordinator also works with members post-graduation to help with services for employment, education, etc. The Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh currently has a Be Great Graduate Program in Oshkosh North and West high schools.
