About Youth of the Year

Each year a local Youth of the Year committee interviews teenage Club member applicants scoring them on service to their Club, community and family, academic success, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability and then selects a Youth of the Year winner for the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh organization. This teen becomes the Club’s special ambassador and represents the Club at special events throughout the year all over the community by speaking about their Club experience and the impact it has had on his/her life.

Each Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh Youth of the Year winner is the recipient of a scholarship in the amount of $10,000 from the Boys & Girls Club’s Charles F. Hyde, Jr. Youth of the Year Scholarship Endowment Fund. Following the local competition, Youth of the Year winners from Boys & Girls Clubs all over Wisconsin compete for the state title. State winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship and participate in regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year winner receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the President of the United States.

The Youth of the Year Dinner celebrates our newly named Youth of the Year as well as other Club members who were chosen throughout the previous year as Youths of the Month in different program areas. Youths of the Month are members who have shown great character, been helpful to their peers, are respectful and responsible or have shown the capacity to be a future Youth of the Year. Youths of the Month are selected by staff members and are given recognition throughout the Club. At the dinner, each of these youth are called to the stage and presented with a special certificate.
