Graduation and Career Coordinator Moving Teens Towards Success

The start to the year has been a busy one with changes, trials but even triumphs as well! Tommy Bentley has moved on from the Boys & Girls Club and we wish him well! For those who do not know me, my name is Jed Carlson. I am the new Graduation and Career Coordinator here at the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh. Through the transition of Tommy and I, we had 20 students enroll in our Driver’s Education Program here at the Club. These students have been working hard to obtain their driver’s permit and we’re happy to say that eight of them have either gotten their temps or are about to take the test to obtain them! Other students are either still working to finish the online lessons or their volunteer hours.

For those that do not know, we offer a scholarship to students to enroll in Driver’s Education. The class is $400, but we understand that price can be difficult to afford. Especially if parents are looking to enroll more than one child at a time (which we have seen a number of cases). In order to receive the scholarship through the Club, we ask each student wishing to enroll in Driver’s Ed to become a member of the Boys & Girls Club Oshkosh and to complete 20 hours of volunteering at a location of their choice. We have had students volunteer right here at the Club, at the Humane Society, for their school, and some have even offered to babysit for families in the community.

We also started another class in January 2019 with ten other students. We had some real “go-getters” in that class and two already have their driver’s permit and two more are about to take their tests this week!

Looking forward, we are running a class in June 2019. We currently only have five spots open. If you wish to sign up or sign your child up, stop down at the Club and we will help you through the process!

All the best,

Jed
