The Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh is proud to welcome Alex Hummel as our new Director of Advancement.
In this role, Alex will lead fundraising, public relations, and community engagement efforts that directly support our mission to empower local youth. He will work closely with donors, partners, and community leaders to expand opportunities for the young people and families we serve across the Oshkosh area.
Alex brings more than 20 years of experience in journalism, higher education leadership, and strategic communications. He spent much of his career at the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, where he held several senior leadership roles within the Office of the Chancellor, including Chief of Staff and Executive Director for External Relations and Communications. In these roles, he helped advance key strategic initiatives and strengthened partnerships with alumni, donors, community leaders, government entities, and industry partners. He also served as Associate Vice President for Communications at the University of Wisconsin System, leading systemwide communications strategy.
Earlier in his career, Alex spent more than a decade as an award-winning journalist with the Oshkosh Northwestern. There, he covered local government and public affairs and later served as an editorial page and community conversation editor. His early professional experience also includes community outreach and prevention education work with Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services.
Alex holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and a Master of Public Administration from UW–Oshkosh.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Alex and his wife have long been supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh, making his transition into this role especially meaningful.
“Joining the team at the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh is both an honor and a source of tremendous pride for me,” Alex shared. “This organization represents the very best of what a community can do when it comes together to invest in its young people. Every day, the Club helps thousands of kids and families across our region find opportunity, encouragement, and a safe place to grow.”
He added, “What excites me most is the incredible return on investment our community enjoys when we support young people early and often. When we chip in together—mentors, families, educators, businesses, and neighbors—we’re preparing future learners, leaders, and citizens who will one day give back to the same community that believed in them. I’m grateful to join a team so deeply committed to this mission, and I look forward to helping strengthen the partnerships and support that ensure every child who walks through our doors has the chance to grow, flourish, and realize their potential.”
Alex’s favorite words of inspiration reflect his approach to both life and leadership:
“Life is a lot like jazz. It’s best when you improvise.” – George Gershwin
We are excited to have Alex on our team and look forward to the impact his leadership will have on our Club and the community we serve.
