Intern Spotlight: Radford Programming

May 27, 2025

On Cinco de Mayo, I stopped by the after-school programming to see what the kids were up to, and it was such a fun time! There were so many activities for them to enjoy, and I spent a good chunk of the time outside with them on the playground. From giving pushes on the swing set to just introducing myself, it was a blast. I love how the Club members are always so eager to ask who you are, and then they remember you—such a warm and welcoming atmosphere!

A girl came up to me and asked, “Will you sit by me at the table?” where I responded “Of Course!” After I joined her, more girls gathered around, and we all sat together, where they enjoyed their walking tacos. As we chatted, I got to learn about their birthdays, some exciting plans they had coming up, and what they’d learned in school that day. It was such a great moment of connection!

While I was pushing two girls on the swing set, they shared with me how much they love the Wet Hair Club. One of the girls mentioned that she was eagerly trying to get her parents to sign her up because she wanted to be a part of it. It was great to see their excitement and enthusiasm for the program because I don’t get to hear the direct feedback!

After spending time on the playground, I stopped by the classrooms to observe the Radford programs. In the Kindergarten classroom, the kids were using Chromebooks and playing educational games. First grade was making maracas as part of a Cinco de Mayo theme. In second grade, there were several fun stations set up, including sombrero ring toss, coloring pages, the Wild Wild Taco card game, and Uno. It was great to see the kids engaged in such interactive activities.

Overall, it was a fantastic day filled with the opportunity to meet more Club kids and get to know them better. I loved seeing their enthusiasm, creativity, and unique personalities. Also, shoutout to the program team that created these activities, they were great!

This blog is part of the Club’s “Intern Spotlight Series”, where I’ll be sharing some of the experiences and insights I’ve gathered during my time at the Club. Stay tuned for more stories and reflections, from an intern’s point of view!
