Building Trust and Connection: The Oshkosh Police Department, Sheriff’s Office and the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh

The Oshkosh Police Department & Sheriff’s Office have been a dedicated supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh for many years, showing up for our kids in meaningful ways that go far beyond their daily duties.

From delivering Thanksgiving meals on the Club bus to joining in the holiday fun at our Christmas parties, the officers have become a familiar and friendly presence. They’ve hosted interactive classes, served warm dinners and consistently shown up with open hearts and helping hands.

Our Club members light up when they see local officers walk through our doors. The bonds they’ve built are based on trust, respect and shared experiences. Over time, these relationships have grown stronger, where officers are not just seen as authority figures, but as mentors, role models and even friends.

On top of that, our kids are incredibly knowledgeable about the important role police officers play in our community. Through regular engagement and honest conversations, they’ve gained a deep understanding of law enforcement and the value of community partnership.

The relationship the Oshkosh Police Department and Sheriff’s Office have with the Boys & Girls Club and the Club kids is incredibly rewarding for the officers as they support their growth and development, including helping select the Club’s Youth of the Year.

Dean Smith, Chief of Police, shares, “Each year, I have the privilege of reviewing the applicants for Youth of the Year, and I am truly inspired by the hard work and dedication of every candidate. Choosing just one winner is always a challenge because all of them are so highly qualified.”

The relationship between the Oshkosh Police Department, the Sheriff’s Office and our Club is a powerful example of how connection, consistency and care can shape the lives of young people for the better.
