Reader’s Cafe’

About Reader’s Cafe’

The Club and Winnebago County Literacy Council have partnered to help kids enhance their literacy skills through the Reader’s Cafe’ program. The program will seek to increase students reading comprehension skills, fluency skills, reading stamina, vocabulary, confidence and love of reading. Reader’s Cafe’ is for ages 6 to 18 and is divided into a few programs.

Book Club

Book Club will be for our teen readers to discuss a book as a group and critically think about the book. This is a great way to build confidence, develop comprehension, and strengthen reading strategies.

Choral Reading

Choral Reading is an interpretive reading of text, often poetry or songs, by a group of voices for our 6 to 12 year old members. Students may read individual lines or stanzas alone, in pairs, or in unison. Choral Reading provides a model of fluent reading for students as they listen to sound, stress, duration, rhythm and pitch from the fluent reader. This technique improves fluency, comprehension, confidence, and vocabulary.

One on One Tutoring

One on One Tutoring will be for our teens who are struggling with their reading levels. Trained tutors will meet with their student at least once a week for one hour. The tutor will focus on basic literacy skills reading fluency, comprehension, and word attack skills. The tutor-student relationship has proven to improve attitudes about reading for academic purposes and pleasure.

Reader’s Theater

Readers Theater is a dramatic presentation of a written work in a script form for our 6 to 12 year old members . Readers read from a “script” and reading parts are divided among the readers. No memorization, costumes, blocking, or special lighting is needed. Its goal is to enhance students’ reading skills and confidence by having them practice reading with a purpose. Readers Theater builds fluency and confidence, reading attending, reading stamina, and builds comprehension.
